In Merrimac, the local commitment to saving energy is already taking shape in a number of ways. Merrimac Municipal Light Department (MMLD) supports energy-efficiency programs designed to help customers reduce energy use and lower their electric bills while continuing to increase the amount of carbon-free electricity in its power supply.
Now, MMLD and HomeWorks Energy are expanding that commitment inside Merrimac homes.
Through our ongoing partnership, residents have more opportunities to understand how their homes are performing, identify ways to improve comfort and efficiency, and learn about resources that can help make those improvements affordable. And with the introduction of HomeWorks’ HealthyHome Checkup, those opportunities are expanding to more households—regardless of how they heat their homes.
Merrimac residents who heat with natural gas may qualify for a no-cost Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment, while MMLD is funding a limited number of HealthyHome Checkups for residents who heat with oil, propane, or electricity.
Together, these programs give more Merrimac households a place to start when it comes to creating healthier, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient homes.
No-Cost Mass Save® Home Energy Assessments for Natural Gas Customers
If you heat your Merrimac home with natural gas through National Grid, HomeWorks Energy may be able to provide a Home Energy Assessment at no cost to you, thanks to the Sponsors of Mass Save.
During the visit, a certified Home Energy Specialist evaluates your home’s energy performance, looks for opportunities to improve comfort and efficiency, and provides a customized home energy report with recommended next steps.
Depending on your home and eligibility, a completed assessment can also connect you with valuable Mass Save incentives, including:
- 100% off air sealing
- 75-100% off recommended insulation upgrades
- Up to $8,500 in rebates for qualifying heat pump systems
- 0% financing up to $25,000 through the Mass Save HEAT Loan for eligible energy-efficiency improvements
- No-cost energy-saving products for eligible households
The goal is to give you a clearer picture of how your home is using energy and practical ways to make it perform better.
Expanded Support for Homes Heated with Oil and Propane
Because Merrimac receives its electricity from a municipal light department, residents who do not have an account with a participating Mass Save utility have historically had little to no access to home energy efficiency programs and benefits.
MMLD is helping to change that.
In partnership with HomeWorks Energy, the utility has expanded funding to support a limited number of Merrimac households that heat with oil or propane, giving more residents access to professional home evaluations and guidance on potential improvements.
HomeWorks’ HealthyHome Checkup takes a broader look at the home through the lenses of health, safety, comfort, and efficiency.
What Is a HealthyHome Checkup?
Think of a HealthyHome Checkup as a physical for your house.
During the visit, a HomeWorks specialist evaluates key areas and systems throughout the home to identify issues that could be affecting your comfort, safety, or monthly expenses.
Depending on the home, the evaluation includes a thorough look at:
- Indoor air quality and radon gas testing
- Electrical and fire safety testing
- Window, insulation, and roof assessments
- Checks for additional home health hazards, including asbestos, mold, rot, and more
At the end of the visit, you’ll receive clear, prioritized recommendations so you know what may need attention now, what can wait, and what programs or incentives may be available to help.
A No-Cost HealthyHome Checkup for the First 50 Residents
Funding for this new program is limited. The first 50 eligible Merrimac residents who sign up will receive a HealthyHome Checkup—a $99 value—at no cost, courtesy of Merrimac Municipal Light Department.

Helping Address Barriers to Home Improvements
Sometimes, a homeowner is ready to improve insulation, heating, cooling, or overall efficiency—but another issue has to be addressed first. Conditions such as moisture problems, mold, asbestos, vermiculite insulation, or outdated wiring can sometimes stand in the way of planned energy upgrades.
The expanded Merrimac initiative is designed to help more residents identify these barriers and understand the resources that may be available to address them.
