A home energy assessment, or an energy audit, is a comprehensive evaluation of your home’s energy usage. This includes identifying areas where your home may be losing energy and recommending improvements that can help you save money on your energy bills. A home energy audit also includes important health and safety elements, such as a combustion safety test (CST) on a home’s heating system, and checking for potentially dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) due to clogged chimneys or improper functioning of boilers, furnaces, and hot water heaters.
We offer no-cost home energy assessments through the Mass Save program, a statewide initiative sponsored by Massachusetts utility companies. This means there are no direct costs to you for the assessment or any of the recommended energy-saving measures. Rather than charging you for the assessment, we receive payment from Mass Save for conducting the assessments and recommending energy upgrades in eligible homes.
Scheduling a home energy assessment can be done online or over the phone. You must provide basic information about your home, such as its size, age, and utility providers. Once you have scheduled an appointment, one of our energy specialists will come to your home and perform a thorough evaluation.
During the assessment, our energy specialist will inspect all areas of your home that affect its energy usage. This includes but is not limited to:
- Attic and crawl spaces
- Walls and insulation
- Windows and doors
- Heating and cooling systems
- Lighting fixtures
Our energy specialist will also perform a combustion safety test to ensure that your heating system is functioning properly and not creating a potentially dangerous situation within the home.
The best time of year to get an energy assessment is NOW, whatever the season! Give yourself plenty of time to make any necessary upgrades before the cold winter or hot summer months, when energy usage typically spikes. Scheduling an assessment when considering making energy-saving upgrades to your home is always a good idea.
